9:00 AM – Arrive in San Gimignano
- Known as the “Town of Fine Towers,” San Gimignano is famous for its medieval architecture and stunning skyline of towers.
- Highlights:
- Piazza della Cisterna: A picturesque square surrounded by medieval buildings. It’s the perfect place to start your exploration with its cobblestone streets and lively atmosphere.
- Torre Grossa: Climb this tower for panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside. The climb is a bit steep, but the 360-degree views from the top are well worth the effort.
- Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta: Visit this beautiful Romanesque church, known for its stunning frescoes depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments.
- Gelateria Dondoli: Enjoy award-winning gelato in the heart of the town. Try flavors like saffron or Vernaccia wine gelato, unique to the region. There was a huge line for gelato when we went but it was surprisingly worth the wait. The line moved quickly and the gelato was pretty delicious.
Late Morning: Visit Monteriggioni

- A 30-minute drive from San Gimignano
11:30 AM – Arrive in Monteriggioni
- This small, walled medieval town is one of the best-preserved in Italy.
- Highlights:
- Walk the Walls: Stroll along the walls for a unique perspective of the town and surrounding countryside. The walls are well-preserved and offer stunning views.
- Piazza Roma: The main square where you can relax and soak in the tranquil atmosphere. Visit the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, a small Romanesque church in the square.
- Local Shops: Browse the local shops for Tuscan souvenirs, including local wines, olive oil, and handmade crafts.
Early Afternoon: Exploring Siena
12:30 PM – Depart for Siena
- It’s about a 20 minute drive from Monteriggioni to Siena.
12:50 PM – Arrive in Siena
- Siena is renowned for its stunning Gothic architecture and the annual Palio horse race.
- Highlights:
- Piazza del Campo: One of Europe’s greatest medieval squares, home to the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia. - Siena Cathedral (Duomo): Admire the intricate façade and stunning interior of this Gothic masterpiece. Don’t miss the Piccolomini Library with its vivid frescoes and the panoramic view from the cathedral’s rooftop.
- Lunch: Enjoy a leisurely meal at a local trattoria. Try traditional dishes like pici pasta (thick hand-rolled pasta), ribollita (Tuscan bread soup), or wild boar ragu. Popular options include Trattoria La Torre and Osteria Boccon del Prete.
Afternoon: Wine Tasting in the Chianti Region
3:00 PM – Depart for Chianti
- The Chianti region, famous for its wine, is a short drive from Siena. Depending on your destination, the ride could be anywhere from 10 minutes to 50 minutes.
3:30 PM (give or take) – Wine Tasting at a Chianti Vineyard
- Visit one of the many vineyards for a wine tasting tour. Some popular vineyards include Castello di Verrazzano, Antinori nel Chianti Classico, and Fattoria di Montemaggio.
- Highlights:
- Wine Tasting: Sample a selection of Chianti Classico wines. Learn about the distinct characteristics of the wines and the importance of the Gallo Nero (Black Rooster) symbol.
