Anyone else get a little anxious deciding where to stay on vacation? I know I do. Especially when it comes to all inclusive resorts- there’s always a ton to choose from! There are surprisingly a lot of factors to consider when choosing the resort that’s right for you. Luckily, after you’re done reading this post you should be an absolute pro at picking a resort. Just gotta pack your bags and you’ll be headed for paradise. Oh and PS I can totally help you with the packing part here. You’re welcome š
1. Pick Your Budget
One thing I’ve learned over the years is there can be major differences in all inclusive pricing depending on where in the world you’re headed. The good news- there are so many resorts out there that you should have no problem finding one to meet your budget.
Historically I have found the cheaper all inclusive rates to be in Cancun/Riviera Maya and Punta Cana. Both are common destinations that are easy to get to from most of North America- aka cheap flights! Just to be clear cheaper prices do not automatically mean substandard service. Probably the best service I have ever received (in general) has been in Mexico, one of the cheaper resort locations.
Some of the more expensive areas for all inclusive vacations tend to be in harder to reach locations in the Caribbean such as St. Lucia. Not only are the resorts more expensive but you often have to settle for expensive, unattractive flights. Aruba is another popular destination that tends to be a little pricey. That being said, some of the most beautiful resorts in the world are in these locations which, if you’re looking for that, might make splurging a little totally worth it.
2. Choose A Destination
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that not all places are created equal. If you’re set on relaxing by the pool all day and aren’t planning on going on any excursions, this step won’t apply as much to you. However, if you’re like me, and need a little adventure mixed in, listen up. Make sure you pick a place that will keep you occupied.
Now if you’re happy just laying by the pool or the beach sipping a Mai Tai that’s awesome. You will most likely be happy at any all inclusive given they have a nice pool/beach area where you can get a chair. However, if you’re one of those can’t sit still people (I see you boo) I would definitely look at some of the tours/trips offered in the locations you’re looking at. Don’t get me wrong, almost all all inclusives offer some sort of excursion, but if you know you’re going to need to occupy several days during your trip it’s always best to do your research.
For example, Riviera Maya tends to be the motherlode of excursions. If you visit here you could easily fill up your entire trip with excursions if you wanted to. Personally I have done excursions to Xcaret, Xel-ha (check out my guide here), Tulum, zip lining, snorkeling, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel just to name a few.
If you’re not a fan on leaving the resort but still looking for ways to occupy your time, make sure you check out what the resorts have to offer as far as activities. Many all inclusives offer snorkeling, kayaking and other water activities at no additional cost. Most also have entertainment planned throughout the day. In addition to nightly shows, I have also seen cooking classes, bike rides, movies, karaoke, dance classes and wine tastings.
3. Location Matters
There’s nothing quite like stepping out of a plane after a long flight…only to realize you still have a 2 hour drive to your resort. I am notorious for booking resorts that are super far from the nearest airport. Next week, we will be staying at Royalton Negril which is about an hour and a half from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. I personally don’t mind the drive (especially since next week it’s giving me a chance to check out the Club Mobay Lounge and Transfer!) but I can definitely understand why you wouldn’t want to spend an extra hour or two in a car after just getting off a five hour flight. You may also want to consider the location of your resort if you anticipate an early flight back home- you may end up having to wake up way earlier than planned on your last day.
4. What kind of vibe are you looking for?
The great thing about all inclusive resorts is that there’s often something for everyone. That being said, to enjoy you experience to the fullest, you want to make sure the resort you choose meets your expectations.
For example, when we were choosing our honeymoon resort, Sam and I both knew it had to be a place that was quiet and relaxing. Since we wanted somewhere we could unwind from all the wedding stress, we made sure to stay away from resorts that put emphasis on party pools and nightlife. Adults only was also a plus for us. We specifically looked at resorts like Sandals, who are known for romance.
When I planned a trip to Mexico with a large group of work friends, it was a different story. As twenty-something, single women we opted for a resort with plenty of daytime activities and a vibrant nightlife and picked Barcelo Maya Beach.
There are so many different varieties of resorts that it can sometimes be overwhelming to pick the best one for you. I recommend starting with a list of absolute must-haves. Use this list when you start researching resorts, keeping a list of potentials while easily eliminating anything that doesn’t fit the requirements.
6. Check Out Reviews
After I come up with a list of potential resorts, I like to look through reviews just to make sure everything is what it seems. I personally like using Trip Advisor to do this. In particular, I pay close attention to the most recent reviews. This should give you an accurate depiction of the current situation at the resort. I also make sure to check out the traveler photo section. It’s amazing what a professional photo can do for a run down resort- real traveler photos won’t lie to you.
Make sure you take the reviews with a grain of salt. Some people will just never be pleased no matter how perfect their stay is. I generally don’t worry too much about a negative review or two. However, if you notice multiple travelers complaining about the same problem this can be a red flag.
